Most guides for small Indian towns read like a list of everything nearby. A local’s guide is different. It is what you actually do when you have a day, a weekend, or a week, and what you skip even if it shows up in search results. This is the honest version for Jatani, written for someone staying at Hotel Landmark or nearby and wanting to use their time well.
Morning at Lingaraj Temple
Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar is 15km from Jatani and the largest active temple in the city. Morning puja between 6am and 8am is the right time to go. Non-Hindus cannot enter the main sanctum but the outer complex and the viewing platform nearby are open to everyone. The scale, the carvings, and the energy of morning devotees make this the most worthwhile temple stop in Bhubaneswar. Shoes off at the entrance, cover shoulders and knees, and photography is permitted in the outer complex only.
Afternoon temple crawl in Bhubaneswar
After lunch, do a temple crawl: Mukteshwar (10th century, intricate carvings, INR 25 entry for Indians), Rajarani (11th century, the best carved human figures, photography freely allowed), and Parasurameswara (7th century, the oldest of the group). These three are within walking distance of each other and cover 400 years of Kalinga temple architecture. Budget three hours, with breaks for water and shade between. A guide from the ASI desk at Rajarani is INR 200 to 400 and worth the cost because the iconography is dense.
Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves
The twin hills of Udayagiri and Khandagiri hold Jain rock-cut caves dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries BCE. Udayagiri has 18 caves and Khandagiri has 15. The Ranigumpha (Queen’s cave) on Udayagiri is the most decorated, with bas-reliefs of court scenes. Entry INR 25 for Indians, INR 300 for foreigners. The climb is moderate, with steep stairs in places, so bring water. Mornings are cooler and less crowded. Allow two hours.
Konark Sun Temple as a half day
The Konark Sun Temple (90km) is the single most impressive monument you can reach from Jatani, and if you only do one thing outside town, do this. The 13th century stone chariot is a UNESCO site and the scale of the wheels and horses in stone has to be seen. INR 40 Indian, INR 600 foreign. Take a guide at the gate, the iconography is not obvious without one. Pair with Chandrabhaga Beach 3km further for a walk before heading back.
Chilika Lake for wildlife and quiet
If you have two days or more, add a day to Chilika Lake via Satapada. Irrawaddy dolphins are the main draw, best seen from a morning boat between 7am and 10am. INR 200 to 300 for shared, INR 1500 to 2500 for a private boat. Bird watchers come in winter (November to February) when migratory flamingos, pelicans, and bar-headed geese arrive. The lake itself is enormous, 1100 square km, and a day trip only samples the northern edge.
Eat your way through the town
Spending half a day eating is a valid plan in Odisha. Start with breakfast of idli or dosa at a local South Indian place (INR 60 to 120). Mid-morning chai and a bada from a street cart (INR 30). Lunch: full Odia thali at a family run bhojanalaya (INR 180 to 350). Afternoon sweet: Chhena Poda from a traditional shop (INR 40 per slice). Evening: gupchup and dahi bara aludum from the market stalls (INR 50 to 80). Dinner: seafood at a mid range restaurant (INR 600 to 1000 per person). This is not excessive by local standards, people here genuinely eat this much when the food is good.
Walk the markets at dusk
The main market along NH16 comes alive between 5pm and 9pm. Vegetable vendors, fish sellers, garment shops, tailors, and snack stalls all hit peak activity. This is where you see Jatani as a living town rather than a tourist stop. Bring small cash, walk slowly, and do not be afraid to try street snacks from the busy stalls. A friendly greeting (namaskar or namaste) goes a long way.
Film at Nandankanan Zoo
Nandankanan, 30km north, is one of the better laid out zoos in India and has white tigers, rhinos, and a lion safari. INR 50 entry plus INR 100 safari. Closed Mondays. Families with kids will get a full morning out of it. Photography is allowed and the enclosures are larger than most Indian zoos. Skip the pedal boats, the ride is boring and overpriced.
Classical dance and evening culture
Odissi is one of India’s eight classical dance forms and originated here. The Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi in Bhubaneswar runs performances most weekends, tickets INR 100 to 300. The Konark Dance Festival in early December is a five day open air festival at the Sun Temple itself. If your dates align, buy tickets in advance through the Odisha Tourism website. Even a single evening of Odissi is a genuine cultural experience.
A two day itinerary
Day one: morning at Lingaraj Temple by 7am, breakfast at a local South Indian place, Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves from 10am to 12pm, lunch at Dalma on Janpath, afternoon Mukteshwar and Rajarani temple crawl, dinner in Jatani. Day two: leave by 7am for Konark, temple until 11am, Chandrabhaga Beach, lunch in Puri, Jagannath Temple complex, back in Jatani by evening. This sequence works for most first time visitors and covers the canonical sights of the region without rushing.
“Stayed at this Hotel for 9 nights…very courteous and prompt staff. The location is noise-free despite being on the main road.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the one must-do thing?
The Konark Sun Temple if you have time for the 90km drive, otherwise the Lingaraj and Mukteshwar temple pair in Bhubaneswar.
Is it worth going to Chilika for just one day?
Yes if you leave before 6am and commit to Satapada. You will be on the water by 8am and back in Jatani by 7pm. Not ideal but workable.
Can kids enjoy Jatani and nearby?
Yes. Nandankanan Zoo, the Regional Science Centre, and Puri Beach all work well for kids. Temples are fine in short doses.
What should I avoid?
Tourist trap shops that drivers sometimes push you to visit. Politely decline and insist on your stated destination.
How many days do I need to see the area properly?
Three days covers Bhubaneswar temples, Konark, and one of Puri or Chilika. Five to six days lets you include all the above plus Udayagiri and a proper rest day.
